I am using unix for the first time (Solaris 8 on a SunBlade 150). When I start up, I get 2 windows, one called Console and one called Terminal. It seems like they serve exactly the same purpose: typing unix sommands. Can someone please explain what these windows are used for and the difference between the two?

The main difference is the console window is where the system spits out console logs. So if you were trying to type commands in the window, you may get interrupted by console messages. A terminal windows will not do this. The terminal is the one you should be using.
