If so, how? What makes one human being more valuable than another?

I am so glad that God answers this question and not man. Since He is the Potter and we are the clay, God knows the value of us all. When man tries to answer this question with killings, man will still answer to God.

Our value lies in what Almighty God thinks of us and aren't we glad that He is a loving Father? Aren't we glad this decision is in His hands?

in human terms...yes

what makes a human more valuable than other is his or her evolutionary charecteristics that places that person ahead of the rest. Sometimes some people possess that intuitionally... but that value can be cultivated, harnessed and attained.

But in terms of cosmic existence, everybody is equally important. Just like each and every note is important in a symphony of music... it wont be a melody without a single note. So I guess, everybody contributes to the grandeur of existence in a significant way.
hmm... when I think of it, I'm not sure if we can really place a value on life's expressions according to our judgements... bcoz our judgements are based on our ego.. even if our judgements are selfless. If we look beyond that ego... then everything has equal worth.

Great question. This question has baffled the greatest of philosophers.

People are of unequal worth if you think about impact factor on society...compare Einstein to John Doe...who advances our civilization and who is uninvolved? From an evolutionary standpoint, certain genetic combinations make some people more fit to survive. Individuals also hold personal value (ie within relationships) that cannot be quantified. There are too many factors to make such a judgement. Moreover, what have such notions spawned? Slavery, caste systems, genocide, discrimination. This kind of comparison without context is destructive and, quite frankly, impossible.

That being said, there is a just-for-fun website, www.humanforsale.com that calculates your "worth" if you're interested in societal value

The facets of humanity are 'valuable' from different perspectives. The scholar is valued for academic spirit. The scientist is valued for expertise. The cleric is valued for spirituality. The rich are valued for their assets and credit worthiness. The pure of heart are valued for their virtue. The military people are valued for their warfare and fighting skills ... and the list could go on.

Being "worth" more is relative to what you value. Therefore people are worth more to some and less to others; though they attain the same stature in society. The subjective nature of what we value as a people change the worth of a single human being to be congruent with the person evaluating that worth.

I am worth more to some; much less to others -- and not at all to some. However, I am the same person. It depends on whom I must rely for my appraisal.

The context is important. For a mother, all her children would be equal - for purpose of feeding, clothing, etc... But for running the family, protecting / serving the family the elder members would be more important (worth)...

Even so for an organization or a country, all citizens / members would be equal for purpose of voting (assuming they are democratic) but the roles held by some would definitely place them on a more important pedestal (worth points) than the average citizen /member..

But there is one other point which may be prompting you to put the question - the social worth factor... people may be respecting an unlettered rich man knowing nothing of value, more than a learned poor person... De jure they are equals in law, but de facto suffer discrimination in practice, due to no fault of theirs...

Similarly, the migrants vs natives, the different social groups (regional / religious / linguistic groups) within the natives, the different denominations (say, RC vs SC christians) within the social groups etc also suffer discrimination - sometimes benign sometimes malignant - depending upon their numerical strength, political or financial power, etc...

So it is not the question of which is right, but a question of which is practical - both by particular worth of consequence and the bane of convenience (bias)!

I think some people are more valuable because they make themselves more valuable. I think its a matter of choice to being better than someone else

yes some ppl are worth more than others. I think it is in providing what others need and would appreciate.

A person's worth is what value he is adding to the society after taking care of himself and his family.

The more you can serve the society without expecting a reward, the more worth you are. The problem with this motto is that in political circles you can be of a great service to a select few .....

We do have wrong set of values in worshiping Hollywood stars where as the firemen in 9/11 incident deserve more status and economical rewards.

No. No one person is worth more than another. We all have something different to contribute.

Money is the only thing that really differentiates "wealth or value." All human beings are the same no matter what color, creed or religion they belong to or not.

I don't believe that anyone is better or more valuable than the others. It's all a state of mind. We can all be subjected to the same circumstances; we are all capable of the same things. If you take money, status and power away from the rich and take talent away from the talented, then we're all the same! The belief that someone is better than you are is only valid if YOU believe that they are better than you are.

physically no, we are all equally worthless if you put a cash value on the human body. since you didn't specify in what form you were talking about, no one can really answer your question.

try being more assertive.

however, in a mental/non-physical sense, yes, some peopl are worth then others. it's common sense why. they are qualified to do more and serve more of a purpose.

Good question. I think the famous superstars and athletes are worth a lot more then us common folk to the media. If you've starred in something, your search will be higher. Don't listen to the media, though - each of us has his/her own self worth, regardless of how we're portrayed.

Anyway, it makes me mad because famous superstars get all the power, news media, etc. I tottaly agree with your question.
