The absolute neccesities are a car seat, somewhere for baby to sleep (crib or bassinet), diapers and wipes, bottles, and a few blankets. A few outfits, onesies, sleepers, and socks. For about the first month, that's all you really need.

Carseat. Hospital won't check you out unless you have one. Next - diapers. Everything else can wait. Telling you from my own experience. If anything, I wish I waited with buying many things - my son didn't use them anyway, and now I have them brand new and I can't even return them, because the tags are off. I didn't even need bottles, and the thermometer I haven't ever used since he was born!
I went by the book and had everything prepared by the list, but didn't need 90% of the stuff. You can buy everything as you need it on an ongoing basis - thank goodness it's easy nowadays! You will end up making at least one trip to a store for baby things the first week after it's born anyway!

Diapers,newborn and size 1
vaseline/sudoderm/some kind of bumb cream
baby wipes(sensitive)you neverknow
baby lotion for after bath
thermometer
ovol for upset tummys
baby tylonel
bottles if you plan to bottle feed.breast is best, even if you pump&feed..
crib&bedding change table&sheet
car seat
recieving blankets
cuddle/snuggle blanket
bath tub,towels & face clothes,baby soap
socks,sleepers, onesies,warm tuke
I would say that as a minimum.I would look into a swing of a chair so you have someplace to set the baby besides the floor or crib.Hope this was simple enough for you.

Find out what your hospital provides before buying many of your items - you should be able to call.
1) Aspirator - little noses, get stuffed up pretty easily
2) Thermometer
3) Long-sleeved t-shirts (gerbers side-snap are great)
4) Caps to help keep baby's head warm
5) A couple gowns for sleeping, but easy access to change diaper (if you want more than t-shirts for your baby)
6)I would hold off on diapers because you don't always know what size you'll need. Our baby skipped NB and went straight to size 1 - so if you do buy diapers, start with size one. At least if you're baby is smaller, you'll have them to use as she grows. you can also fold them down to fit a NB size baby. Our hospital gave us 4 packs of size 1 diapers to take home. Since we breasfed, she grew so fast and needed a size 2 by the time we ran out of the hospital diapers.
7) Get wipes though, I don't know that the hospital will send you home with that.
8) If you are bottle-feeding consider buying different types of bottles/nipples because you'll need to be prepared if baby doesn't like certain nipples. The hospital can probably give you nipples to take home though. Our daughter only likes playtex - but again she's breastfed.
9) Nail Clippers, sometimes babies have long nails from the time their born and some (like my daughter) are experts from day 1 at pushing off the littel mittens.
10) Have a person on call to help out if you get stressed, tired, hungry, or realize that you need/would like something for your baby.
11) If you're having a c-section - have a post-partum band ready to go - it helps you to stand up straight and walk easier - I had an unexpected c-section and only wish that I had got mine sooner; my hospital didn't have them - but some do.
12) If you're planning to co-sleep, you may not need a bassinet right away. We had a play-yard with a built-in bassinet. She didn't sleep in it much; but it came in handy for changing diapers with the addition of our changing pad.
13) A BOPPY!!!! Saves your back if you're nursing.
14) Receiving blankets - work for swaddling and burp clothes. Have about a week's worth (at least).
15) Carseat, installed in your car before due date. You can't go home without it and you don't want to have to worry about it while you're in the hospital.

Blankets,Clothes, Diapers, Bottles, CARSEAT!! Just to name a few. Others can wait, but I would suggest to have ATLEAST these items on hand at all times.
