I think the only way to answer the question is to experience it, and then only subjectively. I'm not trying to be clever with that response, but I have experienced "love" in may different forms and still cannot define it. I don't think language, in any form, can define something as complex as "love". I guess that's why so much literature has been created with love as a topic. No one has nailed it yet.

"Love" can mean many things. It can be a mutual psychological attraction of individuals based on preference and similarity. It can be a fondness based on accustomed patterns of interaction. It can be a protective instinct, usually stemming from one of the above. It can even be a mutual emotional manipulation of individuals based on complex preferences, insecurities, etc. It can be an unrequited obsession, built upon aesthetic preferences and fabricated details. At the least romantic level, love can be the instinctive drive to procreate.

I have heard so many things called love, that I myself doubt that the concept exists at all, except as a mass delusion of the human consciousness to account for all sorts of otherwise inexplicable behaviour.

Treachery lies in the sudden change of states and the ensuing effects with one as ignition to the other, as fuel.

As flirting the moment dwells in one presence, complacency is sure to bear the next. Love is a firebrand to charred coal ashes of Hate presumed dead. The light that is Love sears and brings forth renewed Hate that is the darkness into action.

Love is vanquished as sudden as it is born, whose eternal flames remain the lighthouse of ideals. Dangerous are the ideals that go unchecked sustained by steadfast belief against the constant sea of change. Time is the only provider of recourse to release ideals when they are at their most needed and least wanted, without so much a whisper in the dark of night.

Hate is predictable in its trajectory and obvious in its intent. Easily identifiable, its steady and unrelenting force becomes readily redirected. Diminished hate leaves its epitaph in remembrance of One who never forgets in its wake, with a grim reminder to all those who should choose to follow this path. The gates that lead to stirring of discontent remain open to plucking of Love’s heartstrings, remains unmarked, unremembered and masked in happiness of the moment, lost to eternity.

Love is something that cannot be explained into words, symbols and meanings, nor can it be defined and categorized. It is beyond language, something the human mind cannot comprehend.

To experience love is to have a silent mind.

I'ts a feeling of pure content. A feeling that makes all your troubles in the world dissapear and makes you smile from the inside not the outside. Doesn't have to be with another human being.

Love is...never having to question what love is, really, it is true. I love my husband very much, eternity with him is not long enough. I will never get tired of being in his presence, if he was no longer with me I would die, and that's for sure.

Love is patience and understanding for someone else. Love is selfless and caring. Love is endless, boundless, and limitless. Much like the universe itself, we can explore love for a hundred lifetimes and still never discover all the amazing things it has to offer. Love is an enigma of the best kind, and for me, God is Love :)

It's very difficult to describe...

It's an undying devotion to one person. You would do anything for that person, even jump in front of a bullet for them. It's feeling a sense of elation when they reciprocate, and losing all sense of logic when thinking about them. You think about them in every waking minute and wish to be with them (not necessarily sexually, you want to spend time with them, to hold them). You want to protect them from anything that could cause them pain or sadness. You will never forget that person for the rest of your life, you always think about what they are doing.

That's the best way to describe it (from my point of view). I know it's said too often, but you really will realise it when you feel it.
