Kaspersky and BitDefender works well in terms of protection and detection. Both are little cheaper too. Kaspersky's Internet security gives you 3 users license along with AV Scanner/Remover, Personal Firewall and Malware Remover. If you are looking for free AV, then checkout AVG and Avast Home Edition. (Both lacks personal firewall, but you can use Comodo personal firewall to compensate the package)

Bah, don't buy anything. There are a couple freebies that compare just fine with the big ones. Norton in particular is terrible, like the other person said it will take over your machine, slow everything else down. The freebie that I've been using for a year or so is called AntiVir, it looks for updates automatically every day. Good stuff -- find it here: http://www.free-av.com/

With 10 years in information technology, my vote goes to Norton/Symantec and Trend Micro. Both work extremely well but Trend is usually a little quicker at getting out definitions. If you're looking for a free solution then check out ClamWin.
