Hi Does anyone know anything about how these two schools compare? Students? Graduates? Or if you know someone who is going/went there. I'm not quite sure if I'm more interested in becoming a mastering engineer or playing an instrument (most likely piano) at this point. But I have a couple questions beside which one is a better school. Which is harder to get into? I only have a GED and no SAT scores unfortunately. I play piano but I'm not a very good pianist. How good of a musician should you be to get in?

I'm finishing up my final semester at Berklee and graduating in May. When I entered, there was no auditions, but they have since instituted it to raise the bar at admissions. It is very much a hot school at the moment, we have a new president who has really done well and has dreams and plans for serious expansions. Years ago, it was more a pro music school, but now it is more than just playing, it has many popular majors, sound engineering being one of them. A GED and SAT scores are not weighted heavily. When I entered, they were most concerned about letters of recommendation from your private teacher. You do not need to be the best pianist, but they want you to be be proficient in your instrument. That is, if you become a MP&E major (sound engineering) you will be required to take 4 semesters of private lessons. Still, the equipment for the MP&E department is second to none, and they improve each year. As of now I believe they have a couple half million dollar boards in there . I know not much about Hartt, but I know Berklee is def the place it sounds like you want to be. As stated, many greats have come out of Berklee.....

THe Hartt school is more traditional.
Berklee right now is one of the hottest schools for young musicians who are dedicated to music and excited about it, and want really good training, but do NOT want to play classical music. Also, Berklee has a set of great programs for people who want to produce, manage or be a technical person in the music business.

I have seen a BUNCH of great young musicians coming out of Berklee in the last few years. They are doing all kinds of exciting music and Berklee's reputation has been skyrocketing.

By the way, I am not connected with Berklee in any way and do not have any close connections who went there. But I have seen their recent graduates and am really impressed.

I would have to say that you are making a BIG mistake if you intend to go there to horse around. You would be totally left in the dust if you go there and you are not 100% committed to working very hard to make a place for yourself in the music industry.
It is not a place for someone who is just looking for an easy cool place to hang around in Boston.
