We need to find somewhere for my mother, but cannot afford what most assisted living facilities charge. She cannot come live with us - we don't have the space or the time she needs to devote to her care. She gets some social security, but it's not even close. Is there some sort of financial aid for this kind of thing?

We live in Florida if someone knows something that is state specific.

Assisted living is considered a personal care choice, and is not covered by insurance. Some long term care insurances cover it, but if your mom is already at the age she needs it she will most likely not get coverage.
You can contact your local Area on Aging, and possibly look into local housing for elderly that sometimes offer apartments for older people that are equipped with safety features and "distress" buzzers.
I am sorry I can't offer better news - the problem is that government does not see assisted living as a medical necessity, and therefore it does not get covered by medicare.
