I'm assuming that you want to protect your computer (Windows XP) that is connected to the internet wirelessly and you have a wireless router.

If this is the case the easiest (free) method if you have Windows XP or 2000 is to turn on Windows Firewall. This prevents your computer to be easily seen from the outside world without your permission.
