ever tried keeping the umbilicus open instead of letting it dry up and seal off, so that we could have the option of not choking on our food by keeping three separate orifices; one for food, one for air and one for talking...?

The umbiblical chord attaches to the belly button. It wouldn't be a suitable way of getting foor into the body, as it doesn't connect to the stomache. Blood flows from the unborn baby, into the placenta where it takes supplies (food, oxygen) out of the mother's blood stream, and then passes back down the umbiblical cord into the child. This wouldn't be a practical method after birth.
