Was this done on purpose. Was does fi in California stand for does it mean West or New in some language? To much of a coincedence that they have all the same letters but California ads fi and is exactly on the opposite end of the country and has very very similar geographies with oceans and mountains.

It may seem like to much of a coincidence but it think it probably is just that. The name California was bestowed by the Spanish conquistadors, taken from "Las Serges de Esplandian," a Spanish romance written about 1510 which describes an imaginary island; an earthly paradise. As for the Carolinas, in 1629, King Charles I of England "erected into a province," all the land from Albemarle Sound on the north to the St. John's River on the south, which he directed should be called Carolina. The word Carolina is from the word Carolus, the Latin form of Charles.

It is a coincidence. The name "California" came from a book: Las Sergas de Esplandian by Garcia Ordonez.

North and South Carolina was named in honor of Charles the first of England.
