I myself would continue to purify my water the way you are doing. The stuff in tap water is nasty~ plus believe it or not, fluoride that is added to many water supplies has been studied for decades as making children's teeth weaker/more prone to cavities; as well as being toxic. (dentist's are indoctrinated to dismiss this as scientifically unfounded, or are not taught about it at all). Research it and you will see~ there are many independent scientific findings on this issue and many parents are concerned about it.
Search "toxic fluoride" and prepare to be shocked
"Reputable researchers from such as Harvard and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and numerable other research investigators, have shown that fluoridation of drinking water can result in brain and other physiological damage producing such abnormalities as:
* Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
* Hyperactivity or passive malaise -- depending on whether exposure is pre- or postnatal
* Alzheimer's disease or senile dementia
* The death of brain cells directly involved in the decision making processes
* Cracked, pitted and brittle teeth and bones not being considered as a potential leading cause of osteoporosis
* Higher hip fracture rates
* Reduction in intelligence and increased learning disability "
It is up to you as the mother, I don't mean to scare you and sound paranoid. I think however it is better to know all the facts. All the best to you :-)
BTW Hilbilly (below) fluoride IS NOT in every water system~ many municipalities resist this toxin being added to their water supply; while citizens of OTHER municipalities are fighting to get the toxin REMOVED.

I've had tap water and well water all my life. My children, now 5 and 7, have had either well water or tap water all their lives. So far, we're all still breathing, we're rarely sick, and I don't see what the problem with tap is all about. Everyone seems to be so preoccupied with anti-bacterial handsoap/bathsoap/dishsoap, bottled water, bicycle helmets, little league baseball pads...I mean c'mon! Unless there is something seriously wrong with the water where you live, and there are some places that you should boil the water, there's no reason that tap water will hurt a thing. It is good to use tap water, well water, and regular soap. It helps build your body's immune system. Even with all the "bugs" that have been going around the grade school this year, we haven't had any problems...knock on wood. How can this be without all the protective equipment, bottled water, and anti-bacterial soap?!?

I am lucky enough to have well water. It is pure straight from the tap. When I had my twins I lived inside city limits and just used a Britta. I never boiled water. It makes water 'flat' Try a glass of cooled boiled water and a glass of regular (or filtered) tap. There is quite a difference in flavor. The only exception to this is if you live in an area that specifically recommends boiling.

At 6 months you can start using tap water for drinking water but you still have to boil the water to make formula milk until the age of 12 months.

Hmm. Is this something new? My son is only 6, so he wasn't a baby all that long ago. Other than the general suggestion for people of all ages for bottled water, I never heard that you specifically shouldn't give a child water from the tap. (And in fact, I've heard & read that bottled water isn't that much more healthier either.) As an alternative, I would suggest a tap filter like Brita, etc.

In Britain and Ireland the water is safe to drink from the tap, but you might want to wait til your baby is a year old, as below this they have weak immune systems and get sick quicker.

Well i would never give tap water to any child i dont even drink it myself there are so many things in tap water, chemicals and germs that its quite bad for you plus the chlorine in it is bad for your teeth. i'd stick to the boiled water or get a filter jug and keep it topped up in your fridge. we now all just drink bottled water including my 7 year old.

I asked my doctor about this last week. he said you can give babies unboiled tap water after 6 months, except in formula. if you are using water in formula it must be boiled, regardless of the child's age.
