In 2004, scientists perferct parthenogenesis in mice. In 2006, it was goats. If human parthenogenesis (fertilization without male semen) becomes possible, does that spell the end for men? Should we all start packing our bags for Mars right now?

I'm pretty sure male is a gender not a race, and we're good for a heck of a lot more than just breeding. Whether or not women are capable, the majority of executive positions, the armed forces, the general workforce, blue collar positions, and sports are male controlled. Shortly after parthenogenesis will come the ability to incubate in a lab. Using your logic we should send women to venus and populate Earth with breeding labs.

Interesting question! The mouse parthenogenesis could only happen with a lot of genetic manipulation and most of the pups died anyway (see http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=16 for the details). I think men are safe for now .

Another interesting side note is the possible extinction of the Y chromsome. Over time, the Y has become smaller and smaller (although there is some indication that it may have stabilized). In at least one species of vole, the Y has completely disappeared...no one knows how the males and females come about in that species.

properly, seeing as civilized societies already vogue in the route of lowering populations, it does no longer be too a lot of a stretch to anticipate human extinction without the choose for top end sex dolls. That stated, it doesn't unavoidably mean the destruction of the human race if we do not bodily mate with one yet another. provided that we are already talking on the challenge, it truly is likely that others have created and are making kinds of backup powerful structures. I this this idea is exciting, so, carrying it to an extension, we are able to not become extinct, yet, like robots, lets ultimately be man made.

Why should we go to Mars? There are no women there!

Ever since in-vitro fertilization was developed, 30 years ago, the semen of one man became sufficent to make dozen of babies. Yet, no one advocated the old method to be totally replaced by the new one.

Last time I cheked, there were women past their reproductive age still having sex, so it seems reasonnable to assume that, even if pathenogenesis would be fast, safe and cheap, women and men would still enjoy each other's company.

No worries because sex between male and females is still very enjoyable to most of the population of the world. Only the infertile and gay population will want this.
