If it's on your computer, there are spying programs out there that'll give you details of all activity on your computer. You would have to go to a store that specializes in computer software to find the particular programs.
And as for invading his privacy, he's a teen. As long as he's under 18, you have the right to know what he's up to. If he's over 18, but living in your house with free room and board, you still have the right to know. As long as he's in your home, you have every right to check up on your child. Once he's 18, it's live by your rules or give him the pink slip (IE: make him move out, pay his own bills, and truly be an adult).

If you use msn messenger, Log in with their info, goto Tools, Options, Messages, Message History, tick "automatically keep a history of my conversations" below that you can choose where on you computer to save them. Then, you can just go to that saved file and see a complete history of conversations from that point on. As far as I know, all messengers have a similar function. But you have to know their password.
Other than that, you need a Keylogger. Which is a form of spyware and your security will treat it as such unless you direct it not too. SCKeylog is a free one.

PC Tattletales is one of the best monitoring systems that I have found. You can download a 7 day free trial. You can run it in Stealth mode. Easy to bring up and read everything from an email to instant messenger logs. Also gives you passwords.

Only way to see what they are dipscussing on both ends insted of just his sit behind him and watch what he does on the internet this is the safest thing Keyloggers could send your keystrokes to a user EX The person who created the program. For example if i install a keylogger on my computer goto yahoo.com type in my username and password who ever has access to the keylogger files has my username and password

Most of the time, the IM client stores history. So, depending on which one he is using, you should be able to pull up the history. Another less beneficial option would be a keystroke logger:
http://kmint21.com/keylogger/
which, does just that. You would only be able to see what he typed, however.

im programs like msn have a chat log recorder built in, it is a text file in the program files\msn, otherwise the program your lookign for is called a keystroke logger. try kgb keystroke logger, it is a free one. To stop im'ing without stopping the internet you can also block the im port on your router, check with the specific im program to see what port that is.

Well, that's kind of invasive to privacy, I'm sure he's not planning orgies online or anything, if he spends all his time inside then don't worry about it at all.
