It is not clear to me whether you mean colleges or universities. In either case, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology would be at the very top. There are a number of other institutions which are probably as good: Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Pennsylvania, Duke, Stanford (not a complete list): these are all private institutions. There are several outstanding state universities, which offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees: Michigan, Wisconsin, California (especially Berkeley)., and where tuition fees are a little less. Possibly a little below these in rank (evaluations are subjective and can vary from subect) : Carnegie-Mellon, Purdue. Since the range of institutions is enormous, it may be a good idea to find a source like the U.S. News and World Report which ranks American colleges and universities, and which is revised each year.

Check out Oberlin College at www.oberlin.edu.
More Oberlin graduates have earned PHDs than have graduates from any other american college or university. Don't let the fact that Oberlin is in Ohio put you off.
