well the ourpose for connecting two devices on one cable is that it free up a pci slot or scsii slot. the only thing you have to do there is decide which drive is the slave & master

my computer has my hardrice connected to dvd drive.

well each motherboard is different, (speeds, clock, etc) but yes i think normally it does support the sli functioin, provididng the chipsets on the board are compatible

as for video card. i use ati anf have had no probl;ems.

HDD info - you can connect the HDD either by itself or onto the same cable as another HDD or DVD/CD. For copying purposes you are better off having the HDD on the primary and the DVD/CD on the secondary (this, of course, presupposes you are using an IDE and not a SATA HDD), The actual connection is easy - if it is by itself you can set it to CS or Master, if it is attached with another then you need the master/slave configuration. The red stripe on the IDE cable and the red wire on the power connection face each other. The power connection is rounded on one side - you can't easily connect it incorrectly. Most IDE cables also have a cut-out so they also cannot be connected incorrectly. As far as the video cards go - what will work now very well with WinXp may not work so well with Vista. Use your old card for now and, once manufacturers start coming out with updated cards, then buy a new one (with lots of memory) for Vista.

For your first question, it isn't recommended to attach the CD/DVD player as a slave driver to the hdd.

Your motherboard will have two EIDE controllers, connect the hard drive to one of them. If you have two physical drives, you can connect one as a slave to the other.

Then, connect your CD/DVD player into the other controller. Again, if you have two of them, you can make one master, and the other slave. Just check the documentation on jumper settings to do this correctly.

I don't know enough to give advice on your other two issues, sorry!

I suggest you do some research. Info is plentiful on the Internet concerning "build your own pc". Do a Google search and you will find a lot of info.Planning and getting parts prices is very important. Go to manufacturer's websites for the parts you are considering and also look up end user's comments and comparisons.

Here is a start:

Good luck.
