An armpit lump refers to enlargement of one or more lymph nodes in the armpit.

Lumps in the armpit have various causes. Cysts and infections on the surface of the skin of the armpit may be caused by shaving or use of antiperspirants (as opposed to deodorants). Abscesses under the skin may also produce large, painful lumps in the armpit.

Lumps may be produced by lymph nodes enlarged due to bacterial infections, viral infections, vaccinations, and malignancy. A breast self-examination should always include the armpit because breast cancer can enlarge the armpit lymph nodes even when the breast itself seems perfectly normal.
Lymph nodes are filters that can catch malignant tumor cells or infectious organisms. When they do, lymph nodes increase in size and are easily felt.

For a lump in the armpit caused by an infected, painful gland, follow the instructions about the proper treatment for the underlying infection.

A lump in the armpit caused by a generalized viral infection will eventually disappear without treatment. A lump in the armpit caused by an allergic reaction will go away after the "trigger" is removed. No treatment is necessary for a lump in the armpit caused by normal breast tissue. Usually, no treatment is necessary for a cyst.

A lump in the armpit caused by a lipoma is harmless, unless it grows so large that it causes discomfort.

You must go and see your GP asap to determine the nature of the lump and to ultimatly, put your mind at rest.

These lumps are usually a sebaceous cyst (infected oil gland) caused by shaving and deodorant and sweating. If they don't go away in a couple of days I would suggest that you go see your doctor or if they increase in size. They have to lance them open to drain them. The lumps could also be a lymph node that is swollen due to various reasons and normally nothing to worry about. I hope this helps you.

Go to the doctor immediately. They could be benign cysts and nothing to worry about. But if they are not, time is everything. If it is more serious, the last thing you want to do is wait. Many women beat breast cancer, but the sooner it is treated the better. Even if they go away, you should still check with a doctor. And of course, you should be having your yearly checkup at the gynecologist, which does include a breast exam. It can be a matter of life and death.

We all have lymph nodes in various areas of our bodies. They're normal, and that's probably what the lumps are.

But, if they're sore, then it means your body's fighting an infection. If you have a cold, flu, or some similar illness, that's probably why. If you don't appear to be sick, then you should definitely see your doctor to find out what hidden illness there might be.

I have had these lumps myself they are a type of boil which does not form on top of the skin but underneath, they are nothing to worry about they should go in a short time, but with any lumps that are unusual you should get them checked out by your GP.

Just to be on the safe side I would get it checked out. I had a lump in my armpit, I got a mammagram and it turned out to be a fatty tissue lump. With me it was nothing to worry about, but if I were you I would get it checked not, don't leave nothing to chance.

Hi gemma - it could be your glands swelling up if your under the weather, or blocked hair follicles from shaving, or something really nasty. So I suggest you call NHS Direct first (0845 4647) and have a chat and if they dont have an answer that eases your mind then make an appointment at your doc tomorrow. Take care xx

You should ALWAYS get lumps that suddenly appear checked by the doctor. My brother had the same thing happen, and it turned out to be blocked and infected sweat glands-which was easily treatable. But there is always the chance it could be something more serious-so please see your doctor as soon as possible.

Been there. Get it checked NOW, I was lucky mine was a cyst which is true in most cases. A quick examination and a possible test is all that is required. If it is a Cyst have it removed (if it's possible), I kept mine and it became infected - 5 weeks of daily dressings. GO TODAY.
