The Chevrolet Caprice of the 90's is my choice. Had 4 of them, and never any problems. Average 20 miles to the gallon, 450 mile plus driving range, roomy and comfortable. They lasted to about 185 thousand miles.

1992 Honda Accord (EX, I believe)

Bulletproof performance. I got rid of mine without doing anything more involved than brakes, oil/filter/air filter changes, and regular scheduled stuff. I still see the buyer driving it around, and he seems happy with it.

28 miles/gallon, 360 miles/tank. I got rid of it and got a 200 Accord. Never EVER buying another American car again.

Mine was a 1989 Chevy cavalier wagon it got about 25 mpg because it had a 2.8 liter 6 cylinder. The car lasted for 289,000 miles then sold it for a new Chevy Corsica which I still have neither car gave much hassle. I changed the brakes, gas tank and an alternator things that wear out on all cars. The wagons engine was taken out and put into a local race car I don't know how well it did. My Corsica with a 3.1 liter is still trucking on at 105,000 miles with only minor maintenance. I've always done well with Chevy.

My old 1980 Mustang with a 3.3 (200cid) inline six. It would get about 28 MPG in town, and around 35 on the highway., and it was still running when I sold it with 260k miles. It did not lead a sheltered life, and I believe if I had treated it and the previous owner had treated it with a little more care, it could go a whole lot longer. It is still driven by the guy I sold it to from time to time. My current car is an '87 Mustang with a 2.3 (140cid) inline four with 65k miles. It got me around 17MPG while pulling an 1800 pound U-haul trailer from Tucson to Chattanooga. I hope to have her go at least as long as that old '80 has.

My 1999 Volkswagen Jetta TDI (turbodiesel)

I averaged 48 miles to the gallon, but got as high at 54 mpg in highway driving. Plenty of power, no smoke and very little diesel clatter. It was completely reliable and never gave me any trouble at all in the 5+ years I owned it. Fantastic car.

1981 Volkswagen Sportruck diesel. 350,000 miles on the first engine, who knows how much more on the second. My average was 45mpg, the the best was a 220 mile highway round trip at 61mpg. It was neither fast nor elegant, but for mileage and service, I have yet to beat it.
