You can only get one of the three starters at the beginning and you may trade for the others but your rival will get the one you didn't chose that is strong against yours!

It depends on the very first pokemon you picked.. here
Charmender then Gary will choose Squirtle, Gary will choose the pokemon that is stronger type than your pokemon, then if you got the last two starters he won't get any, he will still have squirtle for the rest of the game. for more game faqa and hints please go to www.supercheats.com.. i will be happy to help you out there..my name there is cyber_john3000. Bulbasaur--------- Charmander
Squirtle---------- Bulbasaur
Charmander---------- Squirtle
There's two ways to get all three, one is by having a leaf green and trading back and forth in one version as soon as you get a new starter. Then restart. However, if you have ruby/sapphire or emerald it'll be harder. You'll need to go through the whole game and wait till you get the ruby and sapphire plates in order to trade over your starter. Restart repeat, restart repeat.
