The native name of Greece is Ellas or Ellada ... Athens is located at Latitude:, 38° 02', North. Longitude:, 23° 44', East.

Ancient Greece and modern Greece are both in Southeastern Europe. They have the same geography. The location didn't change, only the time. It is a country of mountains and many rocky islands and has been located in the eastern Mediterrenean between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas.

Because of the mountainous terrain, the geography lead to the development of several city-states. Ancient Greece had no central government.

Due to the rocky soil, the main crops were olives, grapes, some grains. Greeks were fishermen and herders of goats and sheep. Except for wheat, these products and animals require little flat land to grow. These were used as trade items. Because of its location and geography Greeks became sailors and Greece developed into maritime centers based on trade.

In ancient times, Greece included the modern nation of Greece (in Europe) plus the eastern shores of the Aegean in what is now Turkey. Greek language and culture extended far beyond that, however; Greek was the common language of the entire eastern Mediterranean region.
