A crossover is more like a station wagon, and is often based on a "car" frame, suspension, and drivetrain.

An SUV is more like a truck, and is often based on a pickup frame, suspension, and drivetrain.

Most of the smaller vehicles that are called SUVs are actually crossovers. The advantage to a crossover is that it rides, drives and handles like a car. The advantage to a true SUV is that it has the "go anywhere" ability and durability of a pickup.
