Booted up yesterday and this little pop-up appeared. I clicked on the ok then my little darlin' computer (that's not what I usually call it) shut down ~ booted up clicked on ok again ~ shut down ~ booted up.....you get the picture This went on for at least 6 more times (I'm persistant) then my little darlin' decided to stay on I found out my modem was disconnected from my ISP.
I did my usual and reset the modem and viola I'm up and running. The question is what caused it? I haven't downloaded anything new (I have been warned) I haven't installed any new hardware least of all a new modem so what's causing this problem also a new popup Microsoft recovering from system error???

ok what you need to do is switch of the modem when ever it is not in use, if you switch off the computer only your ip address will be lost.

to stop you from having problems and for the sake of safety switch every thing off, when you close down, then on booting up, first switch on the modem, 10 seconds before the computer, then switch on the computer, That way you will get a new IP address every time you boot up and log on, That way you will keep out the hackers

I've had two Speed touch modems that let me down so I went and bought a Zoom USB ADSL Modem. It was much faster too, but any USB BB modem will do.

Like Carling says, switching off the modem (if it's possible) is something we all ought to do when we no longer need to be on line, but seldom bother with. It also lets it calm down & reset itself, often resolving a lot of nonsenses.
