They were a thocracy - meaning that they were a religiously inspired government that persecuted anyone who did not hold their belief system.

It's a common misunderstanding that the puritans came to america for religious freedom. This is not true. They came because they were persecuted in England for their beliefs, so they came somewhere where they could impose their beliefs. They killed people who didn't share their beliefs.

These guys had some hard times with the English Government and the Pilgrims that came to America were essentially thrown out of England and SENT to America. This actually might explain why America has always so much more 'fervently religious' than England has been even to this very day.

The Salem witch trials, which began in 1692 (also known as the Salem witch hunt and the Salem witchcraft episode), resulted in a number of convictions and executions for witchcraft in both Salem Village and Salem Town, Massachusetts. Some have argued that it was the result of a period of factional infighting and Puritan witch hysteria which led to the executions of 20 people (14 women, 6 men) and the imprisonment of between 175 and 200 people. In addition to those executed at least five people died in prison.

See what religion can do if you do not read the bible correctly.

They were persecuted in England and came to America to worship as they wanted. They wore conservative clothing and the men had (relatively) short hair. Bonus fact: the reason Squanto was able to understand their language was because he had been a slave in Mexico. They always leave that part out, don't they?
