I am an American. This question is so hard to answer without generalizing. I have seen so many answers where the typical American is labeled as "fat". Also, we are not all in the movie or music industry. We are, as a country, going through a change in where the middle class is being squeezed out. Poor people eating cheap high-carb foods = fat (regardless of gender). Another thought, is that age plays a large role in the way one projects them selves. A teenager is courageous. In their twenties, one might question the path they are on. By thirty, one begins to settle in. By the forties you hope whatever you are doing will last.
Fifties and its too late. After that, people are so religeous and trying to earn a place in heaven.
You have to understand that this country is run by a bunch of lawyers that can't find their *** with both hands and a road map. I guess what I am trying to say is - don't be so down on American's - we are just people like you with a few dreams and a desire to to do a little more with our lives than our parents had the chance to. Do I think we are better than the rest of the world? Hell no. I read how far down the list we are in education and it sickens me. We have out-sourced nearly every industry. We spend more on our defence budget than nearly every country in the world's gross national product.
And we elected (twice), a president who should go down as the most corrupt and just plain "wrong" of all modern day leaders. I am sorry for any other leaders he took with him on this journey.
Hell, he doesn't even acknowledge global warming. All he is interested in is the profits of the fortune 500 companies.
That was the longer answer. the short is:
Running scared
Scared
(without people) The best place on earth

I know it's just like every other country where you have good ppl, bad ppl & weird ppl BUT the perception we have over here in australia is that america is one of the most overweight/obese countries in the world...i have seen it on the news a few times, an sometimes it really dosn't suprise me..when i go to the movies they do an american size large coke...omfg its huge like who needs that much lol?? Also alot of crime, if you got stabbed or shot on the street people wouldnt notice or help. Also get the impression that alot of americans are arrogant and in love with themselfs and that they think their country is the only important one in the world. I know not all americans are like this and i have talked to a fair few americans who were nice, i dont judge every american just because of the bad few either, i have nothing against you lot...just the a*sholes which you will find in any country anywayz!

As long as darlings like GeoW are round, America will have a bad image, well an image less than balanced appealing as it would be if beautiful people with a better command of the language were leading things.
In response to others, I suspect that Americans all are fixated with big boobs...look at the ones in leadership positions, and their image on international tele newsfeeds for an example.

American men:
Street - Large trousers, rap wannabes, carry a gun for "respect", not nearly half as smart as they think they are. Loud until the cops arrive.
Jock - Large shorts, Michael Jordan wannabes, realise respect is earned, imagine they'd be smarter if they were educated but not smart enough to know how smart they are. Loud when excited.
All American - Large suits, imagine everyone else wants to be them, imagine thmselves as both smart, respected and educated. Wrong all round. Loud when covering for stupidity.
Trash - Large. Not sporty or educated. Aspire to owning a gun. Not smart and quite proud of it. Loud by default. Respect!

American women:
Street - 10% plastic, 30% chemical/alcohol, 30% ****, 30% attitude 100% stupid. Loud until gangbanger says otherwise. Respect the gangleader because they think it means fear of being shot.
Cheerleader - 30% plastic, 30% slutty attitude, 40% for sale, 100% stupid. Loud in groups of 2 or more. Can spell respect.
All American - 20% attitude, 20% slutty, 20% chemical/alcohol, 40% in the market. 70% educated, 30%smart. Loud because women have to be to get men to hear. Think respect is not putting out until the third date.
Trash - Either very large or very skinny due to 90% alcohol/chemical, 10% attitude. Loud because it takes less thought than appropriate. Respect!

America. Large and loud.

I think it's unfortunate for American's that the world sees so much of George Bush, it taints people's view of the place. I've not been to America, but have met American's in England and I find they're pretty nice people, bit loud, but nice.

Men: fat, loud, arrogant
Women: fat, often beautiful in a strange way, obsessed with make-up, ditzy
Place: Could be a great place. Never been there, but it seems a good place, appart from most of the people. And Bush.

But with all of the people, I think they're quite polite (I've been told they are)

Please don't think me racist for saying so, you asked for my opinion so this is the view that comes to mind.

I'm American, but Native American. We're treated like strangers in our OWN country!

And where people get that we're all big is beyond me. I'm a 4' 10" woman--that's shorter than 99.8 percent of Europeans! The rate of obesity in the UK is also the same as it is here, so that whole fat thing by comparison is nothing but a blatant lie. Look here:

American men: either boorish (like Homer Simpson), tight-assed (like Ned Flanders) or hawkish (like GW Bush).

American women: blonde, shallow airhead (think Paris Hilton or Tara Reid); loud and demanding; short fused.

Both men & women: opinionated, thinks everybody wants to be like them, tendency to believe everything they see on TV, wasteful

America as a place in general: beautiful scenery, big empty spaces, lots of roads, low taxes, a lot of bright colors. A lot of opportunities, but not as much as the patriotic types like to believe.
