I asked my wife the same question last night - they CAN'T think they sound good, right?
don't the people around them have a moral obligation to tell them BEFORE they go on American Idol? I mean, I know noone wants to hurt their feelings and all, but don't you think they would appreciate that over being embarassed in front of MILLIONS of people????

What happens is there are three levels of judges. The first two weed out the bad ones and the decent ones and let the good ones and really terrible ones go through to the celeb judges. The really terrible ones only go through for entertainment value, but they had been built up by the first two judges, saying they were amazing and letting them go on to the next level that yeah, they think that they're hot ****.

Although I don't believe that they get paid, I am sure that some contestants pretend that they think they are good so that they can have some air time in front of Simon, Paula and Randy. Some people are willing to make fools of themselves for two minutes of national exposure.

I'm sure there are enough strange people out there where they don't need to pay them. They just want publicity, whether they are good or not. Some probably do think they're that good.

many people watch the show to see the ones who can't carry a tune with a forklift. I think some of the contestants are implants to act like that to make it more interesting.

I think that many of them truly think they are talented probably because their family, friends, and music teachers have been lying to them. Family and friends to encourage and not cause them emotional pain; music teachers and vocal coaches for the money they are paid to teach them. The one woman who talked about studying music for 10 years and had a degree in vocal music should demand her money back.

If they do think they are good they are seriously deluded! I think Simon and the rest of the judges are actually doing them a favor when they tell them the truth!

I think a lot of people really can't hear how bad they are, and their family tells them that they are good and encourages them.
