I saw a program a while back about Ali which was a documentary on his life. One of his close friends, I believe Angelo Dundee, said "Mohammed does not read." meaning that he is illiterate. Is that true?

This question is about the US boxer, not anyone from Egypt.

The documentary was probably 10 years ago, and it was not dealing with effects of boxing. The impression was that he did not know how to read. That is what I am seeking to confirm.

In 1964, Ali failed the Armed Forces qualifying test because his writing and spelling skills were sub par. However, in early 1966, the tests were revised and Ali was reclassified 1A.

I don't believe "sub par" is illiteracy

Chances are he's punch drunk and not illiterate.

Many boxers, some early on in their careers suffer from a syndrome that renders them outwardly illiterate or "dumb" simply due to the literal rattling of their brain in the cranial cavity. It can affect speech, memory, behavior and eyesight is deeply affected as well...thusly, making one not able to read because of the lack of stability of their eye muscles.

This is called being "punch drunk".

He had this condition long before he was diagnosed with Parkinsons....

What context was it? Did they mean that he does not read as, he is capable of reading, but just chooses not to? Or does it mean that he can't read at all? Or does it mean that because he has Parkinson's he can no longer focus upon a page like he used to. I think that he can, or did at least have the ability to read
