The war on terrorism, or terrorism by muslims against Americans in general? Muslims have been launching terror attacks against America for decades now. Its nothing new. It goes all the way back to the Iranians taking Americans hostage in the late 70s. Probably before that even.

Terrorism is not new..it has been happening for hundreds if not thousands of years in countruies all over the globe. Some "terrorist" are morphed into "patriots" as history is played out.
Terrorism in it's form today seems to focus on the extreme Islamists that want to convert the whole world to islam, killing anyone who doesn't convert.
But terrorism exists on all levels...Even gangs are terrorists....Freedom fighters are terrorist.... Heck some people see the invasion of Iraq as terrorism by the USA.
So it depends on your point of view. There is no real beginning and there will never be an end to terrorism.

The critical event, I believe, is the suicidal attack on the World Trade Center on 11/9/2001. Before that, there are minor terrorist attacks everywhere, but they receive little attention, possibly because they involve countries of little affluence and influence. Also, the terrorists involved in the attack are supposedly to be truly international in nature, making it a global crisis as opposed to a regional or national one. Most importantly, it attacked America in the very heart of its economic might. The audacity as well as practical consequences of such an action cannot be allowed to continue. America, flexing its might as the sole superpower 'persuaded' just about everyone to join its war.
There is not just one side to this story (as it is with all stories). Some claim that the attack was not made by terrorists but are part of a government conspiracy. Others say that America's war on Iraq was waged not on moral principles but rather economic ones (Since Osama and Saddam are enemies). Regardless, it is certain that the terrorist presence is only truly felt here in Asia during the Bali Bombings. In Singapore, the war truly began with the uncovering of the Jemaah Islamiyah cell group's plan to destroy an MRT station.
A far more interesting question would be why are the terrorists there in the first place? What prompts a person to suicide in general? Despair? Perceived injustice? Few things are as they seem, and in an issue of such complexity as terrorism, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when it all began.
If you hold that the Al-Qaeda cannot exist without Osama, then it must of course begin in some sense with Osama himself. Born to a wealthy family, having completed his education at a prestigious university abroad, he was dissatisfied with the current state of affairs in the global theater. He felt that there was injustice and so, plotted against 'tyranny'. It was at that point when he felt that there was no way to resolve the conflict he saw except by resorting to violence, that all these events began. Of course, many claim that he is just a ruthless power monger.

The phrase War on Terrorism had to do with Iraq, not so much as it had to do with 911. 911 was tied to Al-Qaeda and Bin Lad-den. Not at all tied to Husein and Iraq. Bush used 911 as a tool to gain support. As to why he did this and if it was really for the betterment of the US, only the history books will tell. Yet, one thing is clear. The only one that declared the War on Terror was bush. Even with the causes of such a war still being in question, the finger points to him as being the one who started (declared) it as well as the one who insists on it staying.

In the middle east are many fanatically religious people who want to run their country based on their religious beliefs. They also consider the "west" to be "infidels," and opposed to their idea of "God." They consider it their religious duty to destroy these "infidels" who do not practice their religious beliefs or abide by what they consider to be their god's law. They are so far out of it that they consider it an honor to die for these beliefs ("martyrs"). So, it was a great honor for them to attack the USA., as well as any other place who does not support their beliefs. It is not only the USA, but other places throughout the world. Up until 9/11, it was a problem, but the main "war on terror" started with that attack on our own soil (World Trade Center). From that point on, the phrase "war on terror" became a standard phrase, and is now part of our everyday language. Unfortunately, the religious fanatics who are behind all of this will not change....they will not go away....they will not surrender....and they consider it an honor to die while killing others. They have no respect for life, including their own. They keep spreading their hatred to their children and any others who will listen. There is no way for this to end as long as they exist and consider it their god-given command to destroy any who do not believe as they do. That includes women, children, educated, uneducated, doctors, construction workers, etc., etc.....ad infinitum. If we stop this "war on terror," it will allow them to rest, recuperate, and rebuild, as well as give them time to acquire even more terrible weapons than they already have.
I'm glad you only asked why, and didn't ask for an answer.....because I surely don't have one. I wish someone did.....

When the Islamist terrorists decided to attack the US directly on 9/11/2001 and flew planes into the two towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and one where the passengers of a plane gave their lives to save others. The nut case terrorists had been attacking US sites around the world for years, but Slick Willie was/is too much of a wuss to do anything. YBIC
