It is generally accepted that intelligence is inherited but can also be related to the environment. While studies showed that heredity is an important factor in determining intelligence; it was also suggested that environment is a critical factor in determining the extent of its expression.

An investigation done recently revealed that 70 percent of the differences in the twins' I.Q. scores were attributable to inherited traits. Previous studies had suggested that about 50 percent of the differences in scores were inherited.

Studies showed that the grey matter volume is strongly determined by genes, and reflected cognitive performance. It was also suggested that there is a strong genetic influence on IQ, verbal and spatial abilities, So in short our genes determine the quality of our intelligence, our ability to integrate and process information. The level of our intelligence determines how well we cope with changes in our environment.

It is believed that race and culture have their share in intelligence as well. In a series of tests, it was noticed that Blacks consistently score 15% lower than Whites on standard IQ tests, even after adjusting for environmental exposures. The Japanese population has an IQ level of 110, Mexicans score in the low 90’s. This is believed by some to reinforce the first theory about the heredity of intelligence, and that genes play a role in the diversity of intelligence, since races are related to genes as well. But so far there is no confirmed conclusion that intelligence varies from race to race.

Environmental factors can play a role as well, but in fact they are capable of slowing down our mental processes more than enhancing it. There is no evidence to indicate that our environment can increase intelligence to a relatively high level. It is also inherently easier to degrade brain tissue than to create more complex brain tissue. Enhancements in brain structure require long periods of evolutionary selection, in addition to the availability of extraneous sources of energy. While brain degradation can happen in a relatively shorter time.

most people are only as smart as the tools they use. I dont believe it can be inherited, at least not to the best of my knowledge. For example, I have a neighbor who is 27.. he has a masters degree in 4 seperate areas, speaks 9 languages. And can figure out a rubics cube in less than 45 seconds. Hes an absolute master mind. But his parents on the other hand are so smart... not to mention he has two younger bothers who struggle, one whose barley passing and the other whose just shy of the honor roll. Im not sure where intelligence comes from.. but I do understand that if you make the best of the equiptment you have and enjoy learning.. you will make it a whole lot farther.

I just read a great book "What's Going on in There?" written by a neurobiologist Dr. Lise Eliot. She presents a lot of scientific data on nature vs nurture on brain development and the role of genes. Her premise is that 50% of intelligence is inherited and the rest is environmental.

For a an expectant parent, it's a great read! :)

Intelligence is not only inherited but depends upon environmental factors too.

I'd say it helps, but as with everything sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.
There may be a higher probability to be smarter if your parents are smarter, but with anything genetic nothing is guaranteed.
And how you grow up will make a world of difference as well.

I am not an expert;however,I've seen on occasion some apparently "intellectually challenged" parents have some very smart offspring! For example look at child prodigies who are hailed as having a genius I.Q,and than look at there parents who have regular average I.Q's!
