A job or career is more than just the salary. I consider myself having a successful salary even though I am about 20%-25% lower than the national average for my profession. I like what I do, and I live 5 minutes from work. I have free time, and I don't feel pressured. All of this is priceless. The amount of money is never enough - it doesn't matter that you make 6 figures - you will end up spending it anyway, so why not have some fun and enjoy your work. The success is in what you do, how you do it, and how much satisfaction that you gather from it. Salary amount does not determine in itself the success.

Any salary where I was not living paycheck to paycheck, could still put 10-20% of my biweekly earnings into my savings account, go shopping and still pay bills with a few hundred dollars left over.

It would depend on the field of endeavor. How about people who raise funds for charities without pay? Someone who manages retail stores might not make what a heart surgeon makes. If you keep a roof over your head and keep yourself fed you're winning the battle.

Wow, that's hard to generalize. I think that it has a lot to do with where you live and whether you're married. because "succesful" is to me just being able to take care of yourself and the ones you love. For me and my husband, living on the central coast of california, I'd say about 100,000 a year would be a litrtle more than comfy.
