i have a modem that stays on, i thought i could just hook it up to the modem and the internet would work, but that is not the case. is there something else i need to do.

I would start with powering everything down including the modem, then restart all, if that does not work, next best thing is call your internet provider.. Maybe they have an outage and nothing you do will work? Or, there may be some one little setting or check box..... call tech support, that is why they are there

1. You should install the correct driver for the modem.
2. Then set up a new network connection. Go to control panel->Network Connections->Create a New Connection.

You gotta run the internet connection wizard then re-boot everything starting with the modem.

First, who is your internet service provider? You should call them and have them help you with this. There are several steps to take, to be sure you have the right number to dial, that you have the service connected correctly, etc.

The sp2 firewall may be cutting you off. Check it out.
