It depends on what bird you are talking about. Granted joy is a human emotion that you are trying to attach to an animal, but birds are some of the smartest animals on the planet. Just think about parrots. They are extremely social, even with humans, and a bird that is taught to talk will talk even when no one is listening; almost like they like to hear their own voice. If you're familiar with mockingbirds you might think the same thing, they even sing at night. They seem to like to sing just about for no reason at all except to hear themselves. In the end though, most of the singing has a reason other than 'joy'; such as attracting a mate or claiming territory.

Yes! they are capable of joy but the only reason they sing is to call other birds call mates or when they are mating.

No. they hate themselves for it because they cannot stop themselves. No seriously, they do it not just to make a tune. The sounds they make have meanings in their world. Warnings to other birds to stay away, when danger approaches, mating calls are just a few of the ones we know.

Birds sing for many reasons: to greet each other, to define their territories, to let their parents know they're hungry, to attract a mate, to warn each other of approaching danger and to tell each other about good feeding spots. Go outside and listen for yourself!

My late canary used to sing more on bright sunny days, so I suppose he may have been happier at that time. He never sang while having a bath though.
