I say "a" sudden, but I keep seeing and hearing it both ways, even in newspapers and magazines. Does it change according to the state in which you live? I live in VA, of course. Which is correct?

"A sudden" is preferred and probably more correct. "All of the sudden" would imply that there was a specifc "sudden" involed which doesn't really work for the meaning of the phrase.

It could be "all of a sudden". If you use "a sudden" Then you might want to say things like don't make "a sudden" movement. Where you come from doesn't change the grammer error.

Neither. Sudden is an adjective and suddenly is an adverb.

"All of a sudden" infers that "sudden" is a noun. It's not a noun, it's poor English.

Always use "suddenly"; never use "all of a sudden".

The state you live in has nothing to do with proper grammar.

Standard usage is "all of A sudden." I have never heard of "all of THE sudden" and it's not proper grammar.
