Hi Jason,

While many of the answers above are factually correct, they don't really answer your question. The reason it's called New England was because the English Puritan settlers loved England, but believed the country had fallen to sin.

The Pilgrims believed they were constructing a New Promised Land. They were going to start over and get it right. Thus, they called their new home England -- but this time it would be NEW ENGLAND.

Hope this answer helps. Cheers, mate.

The North-East part of the United States is called New England because settlers came from England, and to make up for the way their old England has behaved, they called the new area New England. It is also said that the sights reminded them of England.

The folks who settled there were from England, and called their land New England. Just like the City of New York was named after the English city, York.

Because they left the Old England the other side of the pond, just as New York replaced Old York, which actually was New Amsterdam first. Any place in the USA with "new" as a prefix generally indicates it was named for an "old" one elsewhere, sometimes by homesick migrants. thus as Europeans moved westwards they repeated place names state to state, with or without the "new" prefix.
