As far as I know, about 99% of PS2 games work in a PS3, and about 90% of PS1 games work in a PS3.
Online capability should be the same.

No. This is a change in PS's policy. Until PS3 the systems were always backwards compatible, that is, a PS2 can play regular Playstation games as well. But with the PS3, that no longer works. You can only play PS3 games on a PS3, NOT any earlier games. They did this to force you to not only shell out $600 dollars for the system box, but if you already have Madden 2006, for example on the PS2, now you have to buy a new one for the PS3 and throw out a perfectly good one, or wait til 07 comes out.

Most likely... There are actually parts from the ps2 inside of the ps3 so it will play the older games... probably, if you were able to play them online on the ps2, I'd imagine they can be played on line on the ps3, too.

yes your ps2 games will work on the ps3 as well as your ps1 games. plus sony is the only company out right now that still allows you to play other gamers online for free. microsoft and nintendo charge a fee. dont know how much but i know for a fact that they do. i have a ps3 and played ps1 and ps2 games on it already.

properly you ought to be conscious than an 80GB PS3 won't be able to play PS2 video games(apart from an emulator on the version with the chrome trim: which has emulation utility on it, allowing to play maximum folk of them, yet that quantity is purported to be ~70% or much less), purely the not in production unique 20GB and the not in production 60GB can play *all*(minimum of ninety% of all produced PS2 video games) PS2 video games(as they have the emotion engine, hardware equipped in to the device to allow for play). wish that facilitates!
