I live in Southeast Ohio, and need to find out. Every year, I think I plant them on time, but don't get onions until late in the fall.

actually you can plant onion or garlic bulbs in the fall if you wish that is why you see them for sale in the fall as well as the spring. so you don't have to wait until the first frost is over. onions and garlic are a perennial and they will come up year after year if not taken out and will reseed them self. Like chives it is also a perennial and comes up year after year, it is also from the onion family and a good alternative in salads.,,,,,Good Luck

Onions can be planted a lot earlier than potatoes- in Oklahoma I'm planting onions today; potatoes won't go in the ground for a couple of weeks even though it is 60 today and 75 on Monday- potatoes don't like really cold soil. Check your zone planting times.

You don't have to wait until frost is gone. I plant mine as soon as we have some nice weather to till the soil. I start eating them before frost is gone. So long as it doesn't get below about 20 deg F.
