I have been what appears to be somewhat hindering my 9 mth old son's progress in pulling up. He can stand when I stand him up and cruise with some assistance. He can't pull to stand yet, I think because he crawls to me and I just stand him up for him. I am scared he will fall and smash his head, so I stay with him while he stands and brace him, so he basically assumes there will always be a safety net of my arms.

What if he fell from standing and hit his head? Would it be enough to give him a concussion or something?

I have hardwood and ceramic floors. I only have carpeting in bedrooms. My baby is 10 months. He started standing at 8 months and was very wobbly. I put a thick rug in my living room which helped for a while. Now he is starting to step and hates being pinned up. He likes to roam the whole house. He falls all the time. Usually on his butt or hands though. Occasionally he hits his head. I wince every time but just pick him up and comfort him then he is off again. My doc told me - after I frantically called 911 when my first born hit her head on concrete then began acting dazed- A baby is usually fine unless they fall from a height twice as high as they are. Signs to watch for is vomiting or not responding. He will be fine - let him explore and gain some independence. Good luck!

I know where you are coming from. I'm a mom of 3 and my husband installs hardwood floors. So naturally i have them too. A child is going to fall when mommy isn't around. And mommy can't be everywhere. You need to let your child explore without having u near him all the time. If you don't then he's going to be scared to do things when he's older (things he can be doing by himself). To ease your mind i would suggest getting a rug (that looks nice in the room- the ones people put in the middle of the floor with the coffee table ontop). let your child play on that. That's where my 7 month old plays. She seems to like it b/c it's soft, so she doesn't wonder off it very much.

If the baby cries and won't stop crying would be a sign that something is wrong. If the baby gets a big goose-egg and it continues to swell and the swelling won't stop or won't start to clear up after a day or so, or if it develops a dent (hole) in the middle and starts to cave inward. As far as letting him go to sleep, try and keep him awake for at least a couple of hours just to make sure that he is acting fine, playing normally, eye movement is okay, and he doesn't go into convulsions or start to have seizures (which normally won't happen from a short fall like this. Also, as your baby becomes more active and starts to pull up, crawl, and walk, he will likely have many more of these types of incidents. You won't be able to keep an active child from getting bumps and bruises no matter how hard you try. And don't blame your sister. This could have happened even if you had been the one watching the baby.

I can understand your worry. We have hard floors as well (some sort of fake "hardwood" laminate. I also know the sound of a head clunking down on it quite well. My daughter has been pulling herself up onto her feet since she was about 7 months old and now pops up pretty quickly grabbing onto anything at 8 1/2 months.
At first we were worried about her hitting her head (and I still am a little bit), but she's gotten much better at falling and protecting herself. Whenever I see her go down, I cringe, but she manages to twist herself in a way that protects her head. When she first started, we did stay near by, but we did miss catching a few times and she did hit her head. She would cry a little, but get over it quickly and go play again.
I think you might have to just give him a chance to get up on his own. Let him learn to climb and be around when he is standing or cruising against something. If he falls, catch him. If you miss the catch, he may cry, but based on what I've seen, he'll learn pretty quickly to protect his head, and how to get up and down very quickly.
When they start letting go of things...that's when you worry!

I have hard wood floors as well. My 3 children(2, 4, and 6) are always falling and hitting their heads. Yes sometimes they get a bruise or a bump but nothing major. Relax a little everyone's kids fall and hurt themselves..it is part of the learning process. You are right if you keep protecting him in this way he will always assume you will be there to catch his every fall(and you won't it is impossible.) Get an area rug or for now lay thick blankets on the floor to cushion it for him son.

It's possible for him to get a concussion on a hardwood floor although it's not likely. If you are concerned, either place some thick rugs down or get him a helmet until he learns to balance.

My 2 year-old son climbed up on one of our dining room chairs, was standing on it and fell backwards and hit his head on the hardwood. He cried for about 10 minutes, but he didn't get a concussion. Maybe you should get a slip-proof area rug and put it by your couch to cushion him.

Babies fall. Usually just bumps and bruises. No big deal, they are really close to the floor so the fall isn't very far. Lock up your dangerous cleaning products and buy band-aids.
