There is a part where these people are in a boat and they are going through and acid lake or something and then some lady jumps in the help them to the shore. I am so confused I saw it a long long time ago.

The film is Dante's Peak with Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton (Terminator). It's the gran who gets in the lake full of acid from the Volcano and she pulls the boat to shore as the oar has melted and the boat is sinking. It is a scene that gave me nightmares for a long time after seeing it.
