I am thinking about joining toastmasters...what is your experience with them?

No "they have the best toast" comments please:)

I love it. I think it's fantastic. Everyone learns leadership skills as well as public speaking skills. The groups are very supportive. You meet people you wouldn't meet otherwise. They build on your skills at each meeting. I look forward to the meetings every week.

You can go and not be a member, so you can check it out multiple times before joining. Also, it's not expensive, and you can join for just six months to try it out further.

I haven't been to toastmasters - I was thrown in the deep end of the pool when I went from engineer to teacher. 2 things I have learned:

1] The more public speaking you do, the easier it gets.

2] If you can speak well in public, people are very impressed by you.

So I think you should give it a try because the potential benefits are so good.

I'm not a member of Toastmasters, but I've thought about it. They have a group where I work, and I know several people who've taken part. They're all different ages here, and the group is very supportive and constructive. Plus, they have a great time.

Go for it; it's not like taking out a mortgage. Try it on for size!

2nd hand information: my niece did Toastmasters a while back, and had a great time, she really liked it. She's a much more fluent and confidant impromptu speaker now.
