According to the Official White House website, eight US Presidents have died in office, four by accident or illness, and four by assassination. Those who died in accidents or of illness were, in chronological order:

1. William H Harrison , illness, 1841
2. Zachary Taylor, illness, 1850
3. Warren Harding, illness, 1923
4. Franklin D Roosevelt, illness, 1945

Those who were assassinated were in order:

1.Abraham Lincoln, 1865
2.James A Garfield, 1881
3. William McKinley, 1901
4. John F Kennedy, 1963

President Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt in 1981.

Starting in 1840, and up until 1960, every president elected in a "zero year" either died or was assasinated while in office. Below are the presidents and their years of election.

William Henry Harrison (1840)
Zachary Taylor (1848 -- died 1850)
Abraham Lincoln (1860-64)
James A. Garfield (1880).
William McKinley (1896/1900).
Warren G. Harding (1920).
Franklin D. Roosevelt (1932-36-40-44)
John F. Kennedy (1960),

Harrison, Taylor, Harding and Roosevelt, all died in office. The others were assasinated.

Abe Lincoln, term 2 Assassinated. Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth shortly after his inauguration.

James Garfield
Assassinated. Mr. Garfield was shot at a train station.

John F. Kennedy
Assassinated. JFK was shot in Dallas in Nov. 1963. Interestingly, his presidency was also plagued with scandals.
