One of my co-workers is constantly undermining everything I do. He goes through my work, tells the bosses that I am not doing my job his way, (but it is done right) and talks to me like I am either an idiot or his dog. What do I do, I already went to my boss, and she told me to confront him, which I did, and all he did was lie to my face about it. I am at my wits end, and I cannot afford to lose this job. Besides, other than him, I really like everyone else, the job and company and the bosses are all great.

ohhhhh...one of them. What you got there is a corporate bully. Just like grade school. I had one of those about 5 yrs ago, thank God the corp merged and we both moved on different directions. All this time has gone by and thoughts of her still raise my blood pressure. Looking back I think she must have felt threatened by me somehow, I don't know why, it's her issue, and I fell into the space of making it mine too. My advice to you and your blood pressure is to ignore him the best you can...everything in the dark comes into the light eventually. Like every bully, he'll find someone else to pick on. Pray he gets everything he wants, pray he finds happiness, it will make you feel better, and maybe your prayers will be answered. I think i'll do the same. Good luck.

There's always gotta be one, doesn't there? I had a really fun temp job once that I loved, but unfortunately, the "one" in that case was my supervisor!

I agree with what others have said, to go to your boss's boss and also get your complaint registered at HR. That way you're covered. If this guy is not your superior, then you really don't need to pay him any attention. I know it's hard, believe me, but if you love this job, don't allow that jerk to spoil it for you. Chances are he's jealous of you and he'll win if you leave.

Another thing you might do is to keep a log or journal of every time he's bothered you or undermined your performance. If and when the situation comes to a head, you will have documentation of all his antics, and it will make him look really bad. At your next performance review, you could show this to your boss and see what kind of a reaction you get.

Best wishes to you, and chin up!

Let your boss know you are going to confront him one more time, but you'd like your boss's support on this. Write down each time your colleague does something underhanded for a week or 2 (include date and time). After a few weeks of this, go to the colleague with your information and let him know that you will be informing his and your supervisor of what's happened to this point. Then do so - bring the information to your boss and ask that she keep a copy of this. If problems still continue and your boss does not support you, then your next step is human resources. Bring the same documentation w/you to them, explain that you find it impossible to work in a hostile environement, and you need their assistance. They should take that very seriously since it now treads legal territory.

Hi Terry,

You mention not doing your job his way. Is he some sort of supervisor above you? If not, go back to your boss and update her on his actions.

Tell him if it happens again, you are going to file a complaint of sexual harassment in writing with the owner of the company, with a copy to all the bosses. Do not hesitate to use this tactic, because in a way, it is sexual harassment as you are being harassed by a male co worker.

If you have any witnesses who can and will verify your complaint, ask them to back you up and to also file a complaint against the bum. You will probably do best with any of your girl friends to help, but the guys may help also.

If I were there, I would help by giving him a fat lip and a black eye to change his attitude.

Since you dont wanna leave the job I'd say you have 3 choices:
ignore the jerk
give them a taste of their own medicine, start checking their work and reporting errors to the boss
go to the bosses boss and explain whats going on and that your boss isnt handling the situation

Is this person in a supervisory position? If your work is done right and to your bosses satisfaction ignoree, ignore, ignor. Soon the bosses will get a little tired of hi inaccurate remarks and take action.
I would no longer confront but continue to do my job to the best of my ability. When he starts again on you shock him, Smile and say thank you, he'll be dumbfounded and soon will see he can't ride you. Good Luck

Go to your bosses boss. You have attempted the appropriate channels and that is the next step.

i hate people like that. avoid them at all cost. or make a big scene in front of everyone, that should make him leave you alone. oh yea i heard that if someone is picking on you that you should stand up to them if you are sitting and they are standing. and ask them questions if they are asking you to do something thats irrelevant or if they are criticizing you. like ask, what do you mean? can you explain?..........that could also be harassment and you could tell him to stop or you will file it against him. Even if he lies, they will be watching him and if you report him enough, hell be long gone from the company.
