I'm writing a nasty 6,000 worder and I've got just over a 1000 words left and I can't seem to poxy finish it. Is this a common problem, or just me being a bit rubbish?

Its a common problem, the start and end of an essay are always the worst. When you get to the middle bit its started to flow and comes easily, but you want to end it wickedly so it takes some thought. Good luck :)

With all due respect, I find the first 15 - 20 words to be the most difficult.

I had a writing teacher once who gave me the following advice:

1. Tell them what you want to them.
2. Tell them.
3. Tell them what you told them.

It really works. A brief introduction, like the opening statement of an attorney during a courtroom encounter. Then address the issues with the body of the paper. Provide all the proof or references needed to expand on the opening statement. I. E. call and question all of your witnesses. Finally tick off all the points to the jury in a closing argument.

Honestly, it has never failed me. I have addressed rooms filled with people who hire millionaires to hold their coats. I have survived every encounter. I'm retired now but I just passed the torch.

Good luck. Now go tell them what you told them.

Yeah it is a problem for me. However I find that when I'm not given a word count to work with I infact write a lot more. I don't know why that is.

Compare elements which you are discussing and add arguments or criticisms of research as applicable. Add abstract commentary which shows a greater depth of understanding. If one research element was supported by a researcher, find arguments or criticisms supported by other researchers. Provide an arguments for alternatives based on your opinion.

If you plan the whole essay roughly, with approx numbers of words for each section, you won't find it so much of a problem.
