Machiavelli lived during troubled years for Italy (there was no "Italy" at the time though). Small battling countries, conquered usually by Spain and France, no unity, no common goals.
Basically, he wanted a strong leader that could unite the divided and bring better future. This goal was so high for him that he allowed any means.

he was nothing more than a suck up..whom ever was in power he would suck up to them..is what I got out of his book..it sucks..
