The average life of a betta is 3-4, though the "average" life of a goldfish is 20 years and the record is 43.
However, most bettas we see are Betta Splendens (species name), you could have Betta Bellica (striped fighting fish), Betta Rubra (OFTEN confused with splendens but live longer and are much less aggressive), Betta pugnax, Betta smaragdina or even perhaps a Pseudosphromenus cupanus (spike-tailed paradise fish).
One of my bettas which I know is a Betta Splendens, is almost 5. Weird things can happen. Keep up the good work!

When taken care of properly they generally live 4-7 years. Mine live usually about 5-6 years, but I had one that lasted 10 years.

No not a beta, but when my children were tiny we had a big goldfish tank. The girls are now in university and one of those fish, ignored and fed only upon occasion, is still swimming about alive and well, 21 years later! It is just a gold fish! I find underattention bordering on neglect is the key. Sometimes his tank has gone untouched for a year.

you are correct about the average lifespan in captive is 2-3, 5years max usually (however in the wild their lifespan is DOUBLE that), but this is due to the fact that most people do not provide proper care.
congrats on having a healthy betta, I hope you have many more years together.

whats your secret? they estimate in the wild they only live 3 years maximum. i like to buy them young and 1/2 sized so they last longer but 7 years is really long!
how do you house him and how often do you change the water? what do you feed him etc?
