In drug investigations unusual "sources of information" are used by law enforcement. An immediate arrest is not always the path taken therefore an arrest warrant is not always immediate. Especially when the case involves multiple offenders. Some cases are presented to a grand jury before an arrest is made to insure the grand jury feels sufficient "probable cause" exists to take the case to court. A drug warrant is for a drug offense. As one person already stated, the drug offense can include anything from a possession of a drug, sale of the drug, or trafficking a large amount of the drug. Each maintaining a higher degree of seriousness. The warrant should state exactly what the offense was when issued and the "defendant" has a legal right to know! In the judicial process, a defendants attorney will be able to obtain copies of the arrest warrant or any search warrant, search warrant affidavit (statement from the officer stipulating why the warrant should be issued). In a case of a search warrant the facts and circumstances which were presented to a judge/magistrate which authorized a search. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. Best wishes!

A warrant is just an order to arrest. It may include on the warrant what the charge is or it may just be a generic warrant where they will list the charges later.

They can hold her for 72 hours without pressing charges I believe. If after that time they do not feel that they have enough evidence to for a conviction they have to turn her loose.

The next 72 hours are the most critical. The only thing she needs to keep repeating is I need a lawyer. After she says that they have to cease interrogation and good cop/bad cop and offering deals until a lawyer is present.

Basically a warrant is a court order. Law enforcement may have had probable cause to get one issued, or she failed to appear for a previous charge, thus a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Warrants can come not only from courts, but also from probation offices. Nevertheless they are an enforceable document that police can take a person to jail for.
