First off, know that advertising is a really competitive industry, you have to be really committed to succeed. When I got started as a copywriter, which was a long time ago now, I used every spare moment to put together my portfolio. I wrote ads day and night. Then I called every agency in town in order to get my work in front of creative directors and copywriters. Their feedback often helped me find ways of reworking my portfolio to improve it. I ate, slept, devoured advertising. I found out which agencies were doing the best work and poured over their work. I looked at all the ads on TV, in newspapers, magazines, billboards, you name it, to see how experienced copywriters did it. How they constructed their sentences, how they used punctuation. Don't be afraid to keep going back to people you've already seen to show them your updated work. Nobody's waiting for your call, you have to pester them. I kept banging on doors until one day somebody offered me a job. There are copywriting courses you can go on, I don't know which country you live in but in the UK the course at Watford College is considered to be one of the best for copywriting and advertising generally. Plus there are organisations like NABS to help people new to the industry get started. Read all the awards annuals - D&AD, One Show etc, see how the best creatives in the industry do it.And just keep writing!
