I am about to finish Uni and want to have a life on the sea; the Royal Navy doesn't appeal, however, as it is gradually sinking (no pun intended) below the waves of government. I'd have to study for another 3 years to get a commission in the Merchant Navy, which would eat up another portion of my life when I could be earning money-

-so are there any alternatives? Thanks!

Depending on your Degree you could join the merchant navy with no or little extra training. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary employs british officers, and although they work really closely with the Royal Navy, your are in all respects a merchant navy officer and a civil servant working for the MoD. If you want further info, try contacting the Merchant Navy Training Board (google it) or www.rfa.mod.uk for further info.

hi...approach the companies in the oil industry...not sure what your degree is from uni, but you 'could' work on a 'seismic oil exploration vessel'...in that way you would be earning good money and could study further to get the quals for the merchant navy...but my reasoning would bet that once you are established in the oil exploration industry you would not need to go into the merchant navy.

My partner is an officer in the navy. If you want I can ask him to contact you, it may be that you don't have all the information to rule this out as a career. You could always use it as a stepping stone to your next job, the experience is second to none, it looks good on a cv and the wage is good.

difficult without a commission, most merchant crews now are recruited outside the UK. If you really want a career and not just a job stay and get commission

Cunning is required here...... a trip to the local fancy dress store, a little attention to detail..... and hey presto! - You can scamper along to the nearest port, search out the merchant ships... and apply for the position of 'ships cat'
Good luck
