In Ohio, they've recently passed a smoking ban in public places, but have not decided yet how to enforce it. So for now, most people are ignoring it. How do other states enforce the ban? Are there fines, do you get a ticket? If smoking occurs in a bar, is the bartender also subject to a fine?

It is a sad day when our government dictates to privately owned businesses what perfectly legal activities they can and cant do.

Not one single person has yet to be forced to patronize or work at a business that allows smoking.

You don't want to breath second hand smoke do not go to a business that allows smoking.

There are plenty of businesses that have owners that chose to not allow smoking. As the business owner it is their choice.

By the way, there is a easy way around the smoking bans in most places. The owner can choose to make it a private membership club.

The club dues can be a cigarette for all any one cares.

In Ottawa, Canada, birthplace of the "zero tolerance" absolute ban, the by-law was written to punish the bar owners, not the smokers. Using the latest propaganda and blatantly undemocratic political means, the by-law is enforced by jackbooted Kevlar vested thugs acting as enforcers on anonymous tips received through a discreet phone number. The thugs have the authority to ticket bar, pub and restaurant owners (at $5,000.00 a pop) on nothing more than hearsay and anonymous phone calls.

Because this affront to freedom is couched in the miasma of "workers health", the bar staff are only responsible for calling the thugs. If they choose to support freedom of choice and not drop a dime on their paying customers, they are not prosecuted directly - merely economically by the closure of their place of employment via the crushing effect of hideously punitive fines.

So don't worry - unless you've worked your whole life to build a business and now have to watch idly by as self proclaimed social engineers dismantle your creation brick by brick while they wail and whine hysterically about the devastating (though absolutely mythical) effects of second hand smoke.

BTY, I am a non-smoker and I am pro-freedom. Think I'm crazy? Look up the mortality rates for lung cancer in 1971 (when 75% of the population smoked) and 1996 (when 25% of the population smoked) and ask yourself why the mortality rate is increasing.

Good luck, Ohio, you'll need it to stay in business.

Yup here we go again, tobacco causes the world destruction, what a bunch of crap that is, look at all the chemicals in food now days, the quality of the air we breath, the water we drink, and it really amazes me that only one of these things are being blamed for everything, you people are all brain washed if you think that tobacco alone is the culpert here. This second hand smoke thing like in a bar the air is no different outside only not as restricted or concentrated, but it is the same. Raising taxes on tobacco this is just an excuse to tax people more.

They passed the smoking ban in Chicago last year, if any one smokes within 15feet of a door you can get a ticket for$50. In most reausrants you can only smoke at the bar, not at your table. As for real bars and clubs.....ha ha ha ha. We can smoke in those all we like.

When will those druggie smokers get a clue. Us non-smokers will no longer allow them to pollute our clean air with their disgusting habit. If they want to commit suicide with death sticks, they're welcome. Do it in a landfill. They litter the highway too. They greatest business raquet ever. Buy your death! for $3.95 a pack! Genius!
