Depending on your allergies and how long you are gonna be in the air, there are several things your Doc can give you. They may prescribe a very low dose sedative/anti-anxiety med just for the trip out and back. There are several, Xanax or Ativan are the two that come to mind first. If it is gonna be a short trip, why not just have an alcoholic drink to calm your nerves?
Anti- depressives are not hard to get unless you live somewhere besides the USA, I guess. All you need for them is a prescription. Anxiety and depression are two very different things. The medications I listed above do not require anything but a prescription to get.
To get something for nerves over the counter, go talk to your Pharmacist and ask for something herbal. They should have something.
Good Luck.

Wow, I can't believe some of these people on here are so brutal and insensitive about this subject...
Seriously, go to your doctor and see if you qualify for a prescription for Alprazolam. It is a lower-dose of Xanax that is very good at taking the anxiety-edge off of stressful situations. It has no side effects.
In these days and times, flying is especially stressful, so I don't blame you for being nervous. I hope you find a solution that works well for you.
Safe trip and to all of you fearless folks out there who are poking fun at this situation...YOU all need to grow up!

I have a great fear of flying. Also heights. The last couple of times I flew, my doctor did give me a mild dose of risperdal. Was just enough to take off the edge, but not make you "loopy". That is the only time I have taken it. Two pills...one for going to destination and one for coming back. I was still nervous, but probably not as bad as it would of been without the pills. Good luck!

Xanax works for me when I fly. It's addictive, so if you request it for something like that, a dr. will usually prescribe just a couple pills to get you through the trip. My dr. just gives me a sample pack with 2 pills in it, it's even free that way.

I hate flying to . Go to your local pharmacy and get these bands for your wrist called Sea Bands. Put them on your wrist 30 min before take off and drink water. Take deep breaths. That works for me. Take really great magazines to. Talk to people to keep you busy. Time will go fast. Good Luck and happy flying

What does depression have to do with flying??
Suck it up, get on the plane, and order a cocktail.
Or take something to help you sleep.
Sounds to me like you're slightly addicted to some sort of pills and you're just looking for excuses to try to convince the doctor to give you more.

You could ask a doctor for a tranquilizer, but I doubt he'll prescribe them for you. He'll probably encourage you to see a psychologist to help you overcome the irrational fear of flying first.

Most airlines have councilors that you can visit to help you take your flight. Give them a call and ask. Good Luck
