Shallow bowls of white vinegar placed around the house works. Baking soda is also a good odor absorber. You can also use 1 part vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle, it works just like Febreeze.

Don't smoke in the first place! The white vinegar trick is an excellent suggestion, but for the carpet....you could sprinkle baking soda, then vacuum after it's had a chance to be on there for a little while...5-10 minutes. You could also sit out several boxes of unopened, vented baking soda boxes. Baking soda is very cheap. You can buy several of them without going broke! Also, you will need to wash the walls with some sort of solution that won't hurt the paint and/or wall paper. Typically white vinegar doesn't hurt anything, but you could always test a small area first, just to make sure. People think that deodorizing the air and carpets are the best way to rid smoke smells, but when my husband and I were younger, we rented an apartment that was previously leased by smokers. Yuck. It smelled so bad! They had done their best to clean it, but unless you paint the walls with Kilz or wash the walls with some sort of solution, it's going to be there. Also, you need to vacuum the ceiling. I know that sounds weird, but it works.

What alot of people here failed to realize is a fire from next door can cause smoke oders in you house as well but its the same solution..

Vinager, baking soda etc.... The problem is the walls and also depends on the amount of smoke damage. Steam works great though

I have found that cleaning with Simple Green gets rid of the smell. Use it on the walls. My parents are both heavy smokers and when they went on vacation once and I house-sat I deep cleaned the walls with it. I put some in my carpet cleaner and used it on their couch and it took the smell out. Dilute and spray fabrics around the house. It works better than Febreeze.

If you can get to Sam's Club, they have a product that is called ODOBAN. It is $10 for a 1 gallon bottle with a spray bottle on the side. It is concentrated and it is the best stuff that I have ever found. It works like Febreeze, only better.

Open all the windows wide and leave the doors open so the air can really circulate for an hour or so and I find it really clears the smell out best. And any heat.
