I bought this fat hairy hamster and was told it was female, but when I came home I noticed it had these balls...which appeared to have inflated...the next day the balls deflated and it looked female again...could it be a herm?

It is a male. The testicles come and go in terms of their visibility.
Find someone who knows what they are talking about to show you a male and a female hamster. It is subtle but not hard to tell the difference....

It's a boy. Pet store have a difficult time sexing rodents. This sounds gross, but put your two fingers on either side of his pee-hole area and apply a little pressure. If it's a boy a little weiner will pop out. If no weiner, your female has a tumor. :)

its a male, their testicles expand when they first wake up usually, its nothing to worry about
