It really depends on your price range. There are hotels that range from around $15 a night to over $300 a night. For a good search on hotels, try asiarooms.com. They have very good rates with traveler reviews. I personally have stayed at the Aston in Tuban which is next to Kuta. The Westin Nusa Dua is a gorgeous hotel but far removed from the busy area of Kuta. As for a travel guide, to get the basics down I suggest frommers.com.

For hotel at Kuta area is Hard Rock Hotel.
But I can suggest you stay at villa, they have some nice villas over there. For 2 till groups like 15 ppl. Stay around Kuta, Legian and Seminyak area, because they have all the cafe, bar, and restaurants there. Ubud is far away from the crowd, I think it's better for honeymoon. They have some great villas though for 2-4 ppl over there. But if you want to have fun with lot of friends, try Legian, Kerobokan, Seminyak, and Kuta area.
For villas Try:
* Villa Rumah Manis, check this webs: http://www.villarumahmanis.com/
( I stayed there before)
*Bora-Bora Villa, http://www.bali-bora-villas.com/
*Downtown villa, http://www.downtownbali.com/
http://www.balivillareservation.com/
For Hotels:
Ritz Carlton (very nice), Nikko Hotel, Four Season Hotel (also very nice), Conrad Bali (ok too)

Hi,
Lonely Planet's Bali & Lombok Guide is the best Travel Guide. Good Hotel? There are plenty...go to your local travel agent and pick up an accomodation guide, otherwise if your doing it cheap, heaps of budget rooms from $10 a nite. Try any on Poppies Ln II.
I prefer to stay away from the "Kaos" in the centre of Kuta and stay at Patra Bali Resort. Its a 15min walk up the beach to Kuta or short taxi ride. Awesome pool with swim up bar, friendly staff, quiet and heaps of restaurants. its about $50 a night if you book from Australia (flight centre or someone like that) otherwise if you book from Bali its around $100 - $200 us per nite.
Enjoy Bali!!

Hardrock Hotel is good.
near to shopping arcade, above the hardrock cafe & center stage (Bali's night life!!).
for Ubud, don't choose Alila if you can never be too far from TV (for God's sake, there's no TV there! it's definitely a place for healing mind & soul).
Aston Nandini is great (this hotel located quite far from center of Ubud - but there's TV & DVD player. hey, u could bring some DVD & watch them there if u want). and they have a unique gondola there.
if u have high budget for hotel, try Komaneka Resort of Four Season at Sayan.

I have disagree about Hard Rock Hotel, as it can became very crowded with families bringing their small children with their troops of nanny.
I second Legian Paradiso if you really must stay in the heart of Kuta.
But please consider moving up north a bit to "All Seasons Seminyak Hotel". It's one of the newer hotel, with very nice and cozy room, good facilities, all in a very reasonable rates.

You can try to contact Putu Dewa at this email address dewa_ex@hotmail.com.
He is a young hustler. Tell him what you want to do or see he will arrange it.
He took me to local (no tourist) bars and clubs, a village and waterfall where the road was so bad we had to walk the last quarter mile and his home village to see how people really live. The last is not guaranteed. After he gets to know you some, it may become an option.
If you email him with your specifications, he will probably be able to set up your lodging too.
He may remembers me.
